We are a few weeks into January, how are those resolutions going? With four busy kids the past few weeks have flown by but we've made some simple changes that have really helped us stay on track.

Here are a few ways to make being a little healthier this year easy!

1. Stay Healthy

Through OHIP+, Ontario is the first province to provide prescription medication coverage at no cost for children and youth under 25 helping more people access the medications that they need to stay healthy.

This started on January 1 of this year and there are no co-payments or upfront costs, enrolment in OHIP+ is automatic based on age and OHIP coverage. Those eligible just need their health card number and a valid prescription from their doctor or nurse practitioner when they visit an Ontario pharmacy. This means Children and youth now have access to over 4,400 drugs covered through the Ontario Drug Benefit program at no cost.

Some examples of common drug products used by children and youth under age 25 that will be covered by OHIP+ include:

  • Antibiotics to treat infections

  • Inhalers for asthma

  • Epinephrine Auto-Injectors (e.g. EPIPENs®)

  • Various insulins, oral diabetic medications and diabetes test strips

  • Drugs to treat arthritis, epilepsy and other chronic conditions

  • Medications to treat mental health conditions (e.g. antidepressants)

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs

  • Drugs to treat some childhood cancers and other rare conditions

  • Birth Control

Parents and those under 25 can check out to learn more. There is even an online, mobile friendly tool to check if the prescription is covered, visit

2. Get Active - Try a Fitness Challenge

There are always some fun fitness challenges going on online, this week many friends have been posting about the 30 day 50 Burpee Challenge. These are fun ways to be a bit more active and your friends online help to keep you accountable the burped challenge can be done as a family. Now if you are going to do these challenges be sure to speak to your doctor and do them safely. Having the right equipment is key.

During athletic activities, the foot is subject to the shock impact of 2-3 times your body weight. Dr. Scholl’s Active Series Insoles reduce shock by 40 per cent and can help to alleviate pain from sports-related injuries, including shin splints, runner’s knee and plantar fasciitis. These insoles also feature DryMAX technology, which helps to eliminate odour.

These are meant to replace the often thin insoles that come in your sports/running shoes. They are great for new shoes to give you that added support and cushion, or as a refresh for your current athletic shoes.

3. Stock the Fridge

The best way for families to be healthier in 2018 is to keep eating your VEGGIES! I find when there are fruit and veggies in house my family actually eats them first. Mann's makes it easy with a variety of fresh and prepared veggies that are available in convenient packs. You don't need to wash, cut or chop but just enjoy.

Mann's veggie slaws like this PowerBlend includes superfoods like kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts and broccoli - so crunchy and with just adding your favourite dressing you are good to go add a protein to bring it up a notch.

Mann's also has these Nourish Bowls. Warm veggie-based meal kits. Inside you find it packed with trending vegetables like the NEW Spicy Thai Veggie Noodle Nourish Bowl™  with nutrient-rich kohlrabi noodles, fresh kale and carrots, a spicy Thai sauce and toasted, sweetened coconut flakes for topping.

This is so easy and ready in minutes - You mix all the ingredients found inside together and then only 3-4 minutes in microwave and you got yourself a delicious light meal. You can warm up on stove top too.

4.  Snack Better

We all know that even when you try really hard to eat better for breakfast lunch and dinner that it’s the snacks that can be the biggest challenge. I eat gluten and dairy free so healthy snacks can be a real challenge for me personally. One of my go to favs is Orville’s new Microwavable Popcorn with a simplified ingredient list that is made with 100% whole grain, non-gmo corn and is high in fibre and gluten-free. It’s quick, easy, and fills me up. It’s also an easy snack for my kids to pop in when they get home from school.

5. Feel Better

Even when you try everything to stay healthy the common cold can catch up on you and one of the most annoying things about having a cold is the nasal congestion. A solution I have been using on myself and my kids once they were over 2, for years is hydraSense Daily Nasal Care. It  is 100% naturally-sourced seawater and clinically proven to reduce and relieve nasal congestion and nasal cold symptoms. It is free of medications and preservatives and helps so much when your nose is blocked from a cold or allergies. It’s a little strange to use the first time but the relief from confession and sinus pressure is definitely worth giving it a try.
